Varnam 'Manavi', Ragam; Shankarabaranam, Thalam; Adi, Composer; Tanjavur Quartette

Varnam refers to a detailed composition that showcases both the technical skill of the dancer and the emotional depth of the performance and is one of the most important and elaborate pieces in the repertoire of the dance. It is typically performed in the middle of a Bharatanatyam recital and lasts for a substantial amount of time, allowing the dancer to display their mastery in both Nritta (pure dance) and Abhinaya (expressive acting).

Manavi Varnam specifically refers to a Varnam that is centered around the emotional and devotional aspects of the dance, where the dancer may convey the feelings of longing, devotion, and surrender, often directed towards a deity or a beloved.

Manavi Varnam

Manavi Varnam depicts the story of our Heroine who is seeking a divine union with Lord Brihadeeshwara and her efforts to it.

The heroine narrates her story line of her efforts in 2 Parts, The First one has 5 stanzas each describing her emotional state. In between these depictions is the Jathi. The Jathi marks the completion of that story line.

Below are the narrations.

She next approaches the deer, but the deer runs away away. She then says I will go to the snake which adorns the Lords body like an ornament. But says she is frightened by it, and not able to approach the serpent. Next, she approaches the damaru which Brhadeeswara holds but is disappointed as it doesnt respond.
